This is spoken in prose, and it means what it says.

It is, however, tied to a conversation in Harlem I had in the late summer of 2003 with Donald McWeeney regarding the quality of a mate being measured by their capacity to cover the backs of those to whom they pledge themselves. That conversation prefigured Kim Jaye.

McWeeney arose as he was coming over to visit us that spring evening in Brooklyn.
