Kim Jaye (whose face you can just make out) and I were northbound in winter up the Hudson on Metro North.
"Going up the country" refers to a Canned Heat song of that title; "can" is another word for buttocks.
I refer to Wallace Stevens in this poem.
I loved hitting the last line, with the etymological pun of "lips" to the PIE word for "life" (lip-), and later learned that unbeknownst to myself I may have been quoting Robert Creeley, though he writes "mouths."
